Mohammad Sarwar MP impressed by extensive support offered by Maggie's Glasgow

Mohammad Sarwar, MP for Glasgow Central, has used his first visit to a Maggie’s Centre to encourage Glasgow’s Asian community to use this support service.

Mr Sarwar’s visit on Friday 28 August gave the MP the opportunity to hear about the increasing numbers of Glaswegians using Maggie’s Glasgow and the launch of new services and classes for centre users, which have received funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery. Mr Sarwar was impressed by the centre and went on to encourage people affected by cancer from all of Glasgow’s communities to visit.

During his visit, Mr Sarwar was given a tour of the Centre and took the opportunity to talk to users over a cup of tea. He was joined by Cancer Support Specialist, Joan Hemphill, and People’s Postcode Lottery Charities Manager Claire Stewart.

Greatly impressed by the positive impact that Maggie’s has made upon the lives of those he spoke with, Mr Sarwar said: “It was fantastic to visit Maggie’s and pick up on the atmosphere and great to hear about the support given to centre users. Additionally, the visit provided a useful insight into how People’s Postcode Lottery works to support charities like Maggie’s.

“I encourage my constituents and members of Glasgow’s wider Asian community, who are affected by cancer, to visit Maggie’s and take advantage of this resource.”

Commenting on the value of People’s Postcode Lottery funding to Maggie’s, Cancer Support Specialist, Joan Hemphill said: “The ongoing and unrestricted support from the People’s Postcode Lottery is invaluable in helping Maggie’s Centres in Scotland to continue helping people build a life beyond cancer.

“This joint visit from MP Mohammad Sarwar and the People’s Postcode Lottery is incredibly important in raising awareness of Maggie’s and encouraging people from across Glasgow to take that significant first step through our doors, where they can receive support tailored to their needs. In recognition of our work with the wider community, we offer all our cancer back-up information brochures and audio tapes in various languages, including Urdu.”

Both Claire and Joan expressed their thanks to Mr Sarwar for taking the time to visit the centre, with Claire saying: “It’s great to see MP’s such as Mohammad Sarwar taking an active interest in Maggie’s, which exists not only in his own constituency of Glasgow Central but with four more centres across Scotland also.”
