World class architecture team appointed to design Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre in Aberdeen

Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal
has announced that multi-award winning Norwegian architects Snøhetta have been selected to design the new Maggie's Centre in Aberdeen.

Snøhetta will head up the design team, working in collaboration with the local Aberdeen based architecture firm, Halliday Fraser Munro, to create the new centre.

Maggie's has been working with the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation, a charity set-up in memory of Colin Montgomerie's mother, on the project to raise £3 million towards the centre.  The Ryder Cup captain said: “The appointment of Snøhetta to design the Maggie’s Centre in Aberdeen and work in collaboration with Halliday Fraser Munro is a very exciting development. I have looked at their work and they are obviously a dynamic and forward thinking firm of architects and I have no doubt that they will design a distinctive building for the Foresterhill site that, like all Maggie’s Centres, will create a unique environment to support people on their cancer journey.”

Snøhetta, who are the only practice to have twice won the World Architecture Award for best cultural building (2005 and 2009). Their work includes the Oslo Opera House (pictured above) and the forthcoming National September 11 Memorial Pavilion in New York.

Snøhetta are using Maggie's Architectural Brief to create a unique space in which Maggie’s professional staff can deliver a programme of emotional and practical support to people affected by cancer.

Maggie’s Chief Executive Laura Lee said: “Maggie’s Centres aim to help people to live with, through and beyond cancer thanks to the professional support and community of relations they form at the Centre – with the space and environment carefully crafted to facilitate this aim. I am positive that Snøhetta and Halliday Fraser Munro will create a stunning purpose fit building that will be worthy of our centre users and which will be a source of great pride to the Grampian region.”
