BBC Newsnight special on cancer raises serious issues

On Monday 6th April 2009 the BBC ran a special edition of its Newsnight programme dedicated to cancer.

Maggie's Fife

The programme showcased new research into the British public's attitudes and responses to cancer. The most surprising outcome of Newsnight's survey was the general public's reluctance to change their lifestyles following evidence that diet and lifestyle can lead to between a third and half of all cancers.

Two thirds of the 1,000 people surveyed said they had not changed their lifestyle and over a third said they tried to ignore or rarely thought about cancer. The full findings can be found on the BBC News site.

The programme also featured a segment on how Britain's healthcare system compares with Europe in the treatment of cancer and personal viewpoints on the personal impact of cancer from Woman's Hour presenter Jennie Murray, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, and singer Ronan Keating who had a cancer scare himself and has lost his mum to cancer.
