Moonwalk walkers celebrate Gartnavel time capsule burial
Laura Lee, Claire Marriot and Nina Barough CBE celebrate time capsule burial for new Maggie's Centre at Gartnavel Hospital

“This is such an exciting moment for Walk the Walk and all our supporters. This much-needed centre has been almost two years in the planning so it is wonderful to think we are finally on the brink of seeing it materialise.”

Maggie's is over the moon as second Glasgow Centre begins thanks to bra-clad walkers

Time capsule burial celebrated with champagne

Women affected by cancer wore decorated bras today (Friday, 12 Feb) and drank champagne to unite and celebrate the efforts of all the walkers that have taken part in The MoonWalk Edinburgh, raising funds for grant making charity Walk the Walk. Walk the Walk have been raising funds in Scotland for various charities for four years now including Maggie’s Centres, whom they have awarded £2.1million to build their second centre in Glasgow.

Nina Barough, founder of the grant-making charity, Walk the Walk Worldwide, joined Maggie’s CEO Laura Lee and Moonwalkers to bury a timecapsule at the site of the new Centre at Gartnavel. Laura thanked Nina for their tremendous support of Maggie’s Gartnavel Centre, which will greatly increase the level of care on offer to people affected by cancer across the west coast of Scotland and make Glasgow the first city in the UK to have two Maggie’s.

Maggie’s will break ground on their sixth Centre in Scotland in April. The Centre is designed by one of the world’s leading architects, Rem Koolhaas from The Office for Metropolitan Architecture, and is expected to open in summer 2011.

Laura Lee said: “This was a really lovely opportunity for us to celebrate the support from Walk the Walk, who will be the principal funder of our second centre in Glasgow. It is inspiring to think that when this time capsule is re-opened decades down the line, that the centre will have supported hundreds of thousands of people across the region built a life with, through and beyond cancer. Thank you to Nina and all those who have walked at The MoonWalk Edinburgh – you are helping us to bring hope to so many families facing the devastating consequences of cancer.”

Nina Barough said: “This is such an exciting moment for Walk the Walk and all our supporters. This much-needed centre has been almost two years in the planning so it is wonderful to think we are finally on the brink of seeing it materialise. It is also quite a thought that future generations may look in this capsule and for them breast cancer will hopefully no longer carry such high risks and even better be a diminishing disease of the past.

Walk the Walk are committed to improving the quality of life and conditions for cancer patients in Scotland and we hope that this will make a big contribution to that aim.”

The timecapsule includes: a bra created by Malcolm McCormick featuring and signed by The Proclaimers; a booklet naming all 34,480 women and men who have taken part in The MoonWalk Edinburgh over the past four years and therefore contributed to raising money towards the Maggie’s Centre; the latest breast cancer statistics; bra pins; moving personal stories from people who have benefited from using Maggie’s; and much more MoonWalk and Maggie’s memorabilia.
