I jumped at the opportunity to join the project board to develop the Maggie’s Centre here as the ethos is so akin to my belief of how people affected by cancer should be treated.  I want the people of South West Wales to have the means to enhance the care they receive and make the cancer journey easier and more endurable.

I qualified as a Nurse in April 1982 and have worked in general surgery, oncology and palliative care.  I have also worked for Macmillan as a Palliative Care Community Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Cancer Genetics.

Since joining the team at Maggie’s South West Wales in August 2011 I have seen how effectively the centre provides practical, psychological and emotional support to people affected by cancer and feel privileged to be involved.

I have previous experience working with people living with a cancer diagnosis and their carers and family members. I have also worked in adult secondary mental health and settings that work to support the emotional wellbeing of children and adolescents.

I joined Maggie's initially as a sessional worker in 2008 and then as a fully fledged member of staff in 2009. I love the centre - its warmth, its ethos and its assorted wildlife - and feel very lucky to be a part of it.

My background in advice work started as a volunteer with Women's Aid, CAB and Shelter and I then went on to work with Age Concern and Mind. I feel quite passionate about people's rights and entitlement issues and enjoy feeling there's something concrete I can do to make a difference. Running alongside that I've also always written; for my own enjoyment, for newspapers, magazines and, since 2000, an annual guide to the benefits system.

I'm delighted that contributing to the Maggie's Online Centre enables me to pursue both loves.

Read my blog in the Online Centre.
